To become a massage therapist you should complete post secondary education filled with training and gather practical experience to gain your license or certification. Education programs are different in different states and they can be found in the public and private educational institutions. Usually, to finish the course, it is required to have up to 500 or 1000 completed hours of practical work.  Massage therapists can specialize in different type of massage therapy like sports massage, acupressure massage, aqua massage therapy and a lot of other different modalities and methods of massage. Massage therapists can be self-employed and that leaves them with more opportunities to grow their own business and achieve self advancement, but it also requires some extra classes in business and marketing to maintain the financial records, to learn how to keep the small business or how to grow. They usually work part time, or their schedule is filled with appointments that can vary every week.
